CONGRESSES
Dr Ralph Katzwinkel was fortunate to be able to attend three international Veterinary Congresses recently. The BRITISH EQUINE VETERINARY Congress was held in Birmingham UK and he was sponsored by INTERVET to attend this very informative congress featuring the latest techniques and research in the equine field. The EUROPEAN EQUINE Vet Congress was held in Vienna, Austria which was specially sponsored by PFIZER for their equine veterinary clients. This was held just before Christmas and Europe was white with snow and Christmas markets and lights so this was a very special time to be overseas. A highlight of his trip was to attend the LIPIZANER SHOW at the Spanish Riding School at the Royal Palace. Finally, the International Congress of World Equine Sports Medicine was held at Spier Estate in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. This congress is held every 4 years and covers the latest research into Equine Sports Medicine. It was attended by all the top researchers in their fields.

CANINE CARNIVAL
A very successful fun day was held at our Gillitts Veterinary Hospital in December 2010 put together by our vet nurse Chantal. The main sponsor was ROYAL CANIN but many other food companies and drug companies were present on the day. We had various dog show events like BEST DRESSED and MOST DOG / OWNER LOOK ALIKE.

Celeste’s Fibi won the “waggiest tail” (one of her three pooches).
We had pony rides for the kids which was a great hit and hopefully there are some budding horsemen/women in the making!
All proceeds for the day went to Charity—viz. MADAMENI DOG FEEDING SCHEME for township dogs in Crestholme.
Watch our for this event at the end of 2011 as we will definitely be holding it again as much fun was had by all! |

ROUTINE DUTIES FOR HORSE OWNERS
Please be aware of high temperatures in your horse. We have had many cases of elevated temperatures and some have been diagnosed as positive biliary or equine encephalosis virus. If your horse goes off its food, has a temperature higher than 38, is listless with pale mucous membranes, do not wait. Call a vet asap.
Your horse/s should have had the African Horse Sickness vaccinations by now as they are done in the latter part of the year. This is an annual vaccination and at the same time we often do the Rabies vaccine. The Equine Flu is a bi-annual vaccination and you can include theTetanus in one of the flu vaccines or give it separately.
Deworming should be done every 84 days for horses on grass paddocks.
Dental corrections are done annually in older horses and bi-annually in horses less than 7 years of age. If you notice your horse is battling to chew or has trouble accepting the bit, have the teeth checked. We have recently acquired NEW UPTO DATE dental equipment including a battery operated hand held float. Dr Tom Ovendale is our Practice specialist vet dentist.
Please call us on 031 7691256 to arrange dental work for your horse/s and if you require further vaccinations or deworming.
REMEMBER A WELL CARED FOR HORSE IS A HAPPY AND HEALTHY HORSE. |
