Our Veterinary Team

Dr Ralph Katzwinkel qualified from Onderstepoort in 1980 and has been in private practice ever since. He has in the past served on both the SAEVA and SAVA committees. He is currently the regional FEI and SAEF official veterinarian. He has a wealth of experience in the equine industry and has a special interest in surgery, equine sports medicine and pre- purchase examinations. Over the years his interest in surgery has been honed towards orthopedic, arthroscopic and colic surgeries.

In 2000 Ralph was awarded his MBA Degree at Henley on Thames in the UK, after 5 years of long distance learning and uses this knowledge in his position as managing partner.

Ralph is married to June and they have two sons. Outside interests are clay pigeon shooting for which he has represented Kwa Zulu Natal and South Africa. In September 2012 Ralph was awarded his National colours in American skeet and represented South Africa at the World Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr Sean Miller joined the practice in December 2012. He qualified from the University of Cape Town with a BSc in Zoology and Physiology in 2005 and then obtained a BSc Honours in Wildlife Management from University of Pretoria.

He then went on to qualify from Onderstepoort in 2012. While at Onderstepoort he was chairman of Wildlife Symposium Committee and the Student Veterinary Committee, and sat on the local branch committee of the International Veterinary Students Association. In 2018 Sean completed his MSc (Veterinary Science) and graduated with distinction. Sean was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the UK in 2018.

Sean is a keen horse rider and is currently eventing two thoroughbreds and moving up the grades. He is a qualified FEI Official Vet and works at many horse shows. He was selected as the South African Team Vet for the 2018 World Equestrian Games being held in Tryon, USA in September.
Dr Bronwyn Desfontaines completed a year as an assistant on a sport horse stud farm in the Midlands before commencing her veterinary studies. She qualified from Onderstepoort in 2011.

During her OP years she was the secretary of the Equine Studies Group, was awarded membership to the Golden Key International Society for academic achievement and received the Small Animal Surgery Award. She completed an internship in Equine Medicine and Surgery at Onderstepoort Equine Hospital in 2012. Bronwyn completed her Masters degree in 2015, and her research was presented at the Equine Infectious Diseases Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, USA 2012.

Bronwyn competed in show jumping, dressage and eventing and enjoys hiking and mountain biking.
Dr Megan Scrooby qualified as a veterinarian at Onderstepoort in 2015. During her studies, Megan was awarded Golden Key Membership.

Megan's passion for animals started at a young age on her grandparents' farm in Stutterheim where she was exposed to a variety of animals. Megan's family then moved to Pretoria where she then took up horse riding and started competing in showjumping and dressage.

After qualifiying, Megan locumed at a mixed practice in Midrand, she then went on to do her year of Compulsory Community Service in 2016 at the Military Veterinary Institute in Potchefstroom where she worked in both the small animal and equine clinics.

In her spare time Megan enjoys horse riding, rock climbing and travelling.
Sr Cursti Potgieter has been involved with horses from a very young age. Before studying she worked at Soetendal estate, where she was taught the Monty Roberts method of backing youngsters. Working with young horses fascinated her. She believes that there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a youngster improve their co-ordination and grow in confidence and strength.

Cursti then went to Onderstepoort to study. She graduated, with distinction from the University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort Campus as a Veterinary Nurse in 2010 after which she was recruited to work at Onderstepoort Academic Hospital as a clinic sister in the Equine Clinic. 3 years later she joined the Summerveld Equine Hospital team.

She has represented South Africa in all age groups (u/14 up to ladies opens) for Polocrosse, against Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and England.
