Our Veterinary Team

 
Dr Ralph Katzwinkel qualified from Onderstepoort in 1980 and has been in private practice ever since. He has in the past served on both the SAEVA and SAVA committees. He is currently the regional FEI and SAEF official veterinarian. He has a wealth of experience in the equine industry and has a special interest in surgery, equine sports medicine and pre- purchase examinations. Over the years his interest in surgery has been honed towards orthopedic, arthroscopic and colic surgeries.

In 2000 Ralph was awarded his MBA Degree at Henley on Thames in the UK, after 5 years of long distance learning and uses this knowledge in his position as managing partner.

Ralph is married to June and they have two sons. Outside interests are clay pigeon shooting for which he has represented Kwa Zulu Natal and South Africa. In September 2012 Ralph was awarded his National colours in American skeet and represented South Africa at the World Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr Sean Miller joined the practice in December 2012. He qualified from the University of Cape Town with a BSc in Zoology and Physiology in 2005 and then obtained a BSc Honours in Wildlife Management from University of Pretoria.

He then went on to qualify from Onderstepoort in 2012. While at Onderstepoort he was chairman of Wildlife Symposium Committee and the Student Veterinary Committee, and sat on the local branch committee of the International Veterinary Students Association. In 2018 Sean completed his MSc (Veterinary Science) and graduated with distinction. Sean was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in the UK in 2018.

Sean is a keen horse rider and is currently eventing two thoroughbreds and moving up the grades. He is a qualified FEI Official Vet and works at many horse shows. He was selected as the South African Team Vet for the 2018 World Equestrian Games being held in Tryon, USA in September.
Dr Bronwyn Desfontaines completed a year as an assistant on a sport horse stud farm in the Midlands before commencing her veterinary studies. She qualified from Onderstepoort in 2011.

During her OP years she was the secretary of the Equine Studies Group, was awarded membership to the Golden Key International Society for academic achievement and received the Small Animal Surgery Award. She completed an internship in Equine Medicine and Surgery at Onderstepoort Equine Hospital in 2012. Bronwyn completed her Masters degree in 2015, and her research was presented at the Equine Infectious Diseases Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, USA 2012.

Bronwyn competed in show jumping, dressage and eventing and enjoys hiking and mountain biking.
Dr Nicolas Demunter qualified from the University of Ghent, Belgium in 2017. Thereafter he spent a year doing an internship in all aspects of equine medicine in Cape Town. During his internship he developed skills in neonatal care, anaesthesiology and medical imaging. Before joining Summerveld Equine Hospital Nicolas worked for a year as an ambulatory vet for a private practice in Manchester, UK.
He has a keen interest in all aspects of equine practice – but particularly enjoys internal medicine and medical imaging.
He enjoys recreational riding, particularly going for rides on the beach. In his spare time he likes to do cross-fit and outdoor sports such as hiking and surfing.
Dr Keith Spargo graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2018 and then completed his year of state community service with the SAPS Veterinary services based at the Potchefstroom Mounted Academy treating the country’s Police horses. Prior to Veterinary school he completed a BSc Honours degree in Animal Sciences and then a Masters degree in Veterinary Science, focusing on Catastrophic injuries in Racehorses, which he completed in 2016 while simultaneously doing his BVSc degree. During his time at OP he was the Chairman if the SA Equine Veterinary Young Members group as well as serving as a tutor for the diagnostic imaging department.

He has published two journal articles in recognized peer reviewed veterinary medical journals.

Keith is a qualified FEI Permitted Treating veterinary and was treating vet for the 2019 SA Adult dressage championships as well as being a registered SAEF veterinary welfare officer.

As a Junior he competed in Eventing to 1m level and is currently an A panel Equitation judge.

In his spare time he can be either found at a horse show or enjoying being active at the gym.
